Gareth Clear is passing through Manly Dam near Sydney, Australia, on his mountain bike, when his foot slips off the pedal. He starts to lose control and falls from his bike. However, this isn't so awful. Gareth gets up again with just a few bruises.
Suddenly, he notices dark smoke coming from his pants. Unbelievable: His iPhone has exploded in his pant's pocket!
"Suddenly I saw this unbelievable cloud of smoke, " Gareth recounts. "Then there was a sudden, intense pain—almost as if someone had pressed a huge block of ice on my leg. It was really painful."
The smartphone gets so hot that Gareth burns his fingers as he tries to remove it from his leg. Instead, he uses his fists to scrape the phone off his scorched flesh.
His burns are so bad that he'll need a skin transplant. For six days, he has to stay in bed attached to a machine that sucks off the dead and charred skin from his leg.
Gareth speaks publicly about his awful experience, because he wants people to be aware how dangerous the seemingly harmless iPhones really can be. Good thing he's taking it upon himself to warn others.
