Police in East Liverpool, Ohio, published these shocking photographs on Facebook on September 8, 2016. They depict a man and a woman lying unconscious in their car with their four-year-old son in the backseat. The police report that accompanied the pictures explains what happened:
Facebook/City of East Liverpool, OhioThe vehicle occupants were James Acord (47) and Rhonda Pasek (50). Police had noticed the car swerving erratically. Apparently both adults had injected themselves with heroin before the trip and were on their way to the hospital because they weren't reacting well. When the officers inspected the car, the woman was out cold and the driver only half conscious. Regardless of this, he attempted to start the car again, leading the officers to remove the car keys from the ignition. The man then lost consciousness while speaking with the police.
The couple's four-year-old son sat silently in the back seat during the entire exchange. Luckily, nothing had happened to him. The policed were moved by the sight of this innocent and helpless young boy and decided not to let the incident simply slip by. To bring the stark reality of the consequences of heroin addiction to greater attention, they published the pictures together with an urgent call on Facebook:
"We feel we need to be a voice for the children caught up in this horrible mess. This child can't speak for himself but we are hopeful his story can convince another user to think twice about injecting this poison while having a child in their custody."
Attending emergency personnel at the scene were able to revive Acord and Pasek. One can only hope that the parents come to realize how their drug habit affects their son and how it led them to place him in a dangerous situation. These terrible images will surely haunt them to the end of their lives, but more importantly, they will also serve as a wake up call for other drug addicts and hopefully prompt them to seek help.
