A woman in the United States has been speaking after winning $3 million that was announced to her via an email she found in her spam email folder.

Laura Spears, from Oakland County
, Michigan, only found the mysterious email after she went searching for an email that was sent to her that she couldn’t find. It was then when she seen the message from the Michigan Lottery.

Initially believing it to be a scam, the email announced she had won $1 million but that this was multiplied threefold because she had opted into the ‘Megaplier‘ feature. However, Laura immediately checked her numbers and made enquiries with the Lottery through official channels.

The 55-year-old said to Michigan Lottery Connect:

“I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot was getting pretty high, so I got on my account and bought a ticket. A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account. That’s when I saw an email from the lottery saying I had won a prize. I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3m.”

Laura, who works as a nurse, has now said she will share the money with her family and will take early retirement. She later joked:

“I definitely added the Michigan Lottery to my safe senders list just in case I ever get lucky enough to receive another email about a huge prize.”

The Mega Millions jackpot currently stands at $376m and is one of the biggest lotteries in the world bringing in millions of competitors for every jackpot.
